Chris Cantell annouces Opera right to your ears

For many people the word "opera" evocate some mixed up feelings connected to a dark theater, yawning husband and four hours full of screaming Italians in bloated robes. Naturally, we are not all lovers of every kind of art. Counting with numerous distractive factors, there is no blame that opera is one of the most unpopular music genres amongst the new generation. We prefer more freedom- especially in the lyrics. Believe or not, the Metropolitan Opera Association of New York City, founded in April 1880 and the major presenter of all kinds of opera, has been created from the need for the freedom as well. Functioning Academy of Music represented by the highest and wealthiest circles, didn't have a pleasure in accepting new members into their lines. These singers created another stage, where talents were welcomed and very soon outlasted the Academy. The Metropolitan Opera, nowadays known as MET, opened its spectacular history with Faust, on October 22nd 1883. The creation of a new, modern wave meant a sudden progress for the society at the end of the 19th century. The similar breakthrough kicked up the brand new project of MET and Rhapsody. They just recently launched an on-demand digital music service. You can purchase hundreds of operas from 1937 to 2006 from the comfort of your house. The art that was once an exclusive privilege of enormous halls is available for you. To listen and give it a second chance.

Chris Cantell annouces Virtual reality

Virtual reality or we can also say, living space for most of the young people. According to statistics, more than 80 percent of young people and children between 4 to 17 years old spend hours per week in virtual reality. Virtual reality could be presented by Internet, PC or video games, etc. It is something older people usually don't understand and dislike the way young people spend their time. Bad influence on children's and young people's education use to be attributed to TV, PC and Video games. But we should not forget about the fast forward moving society and technology progress. Using computers and all the other technical equipment for gaming at a small age can help a kid to create a great relationship to new technical gadgets in the future and simplify their lives. Looking to the past times, car inventor was also considered to be a fool. And now we can not imagine life without vehicles. Some researchers had said that the world will be covered by excrements of horses to the hight of few meters. Where would we be without inventors, fools to science and technology? Looking at the daily schedule of common people, I can see them using all kinds of technologies and gadgets since they wake up. They do it so naturally, that they don't even think about it. Life of children is about learning by doing, or let's say, learning by playing games. And if those games lead them to virtual reality, just make yourself sure, they are able to come back to real life.

Chris Cantell annouces What Santa should bring

The Nintendo Wii is hip, therefore everyone wants it and that makes it the perfect present for Christmas. Every year there is something that generates the holiday's madness and a year after the small video console was launched it still is on top of the wish-list. It is something that appeals both children and adults, competing with Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 2. Why is so attractive? Well, first of all while other consoles are controlled by a confusing array of buttons and joysticks, Nintendo Wii uses wand-like wireless controller that responds to user's moves. As a plus it offers a multitude of casual, nonviolent games that appeal to adults. As it is, although Sony and Microsoft have cut the prices of their consoles this fall, Nintendo hasn't done it due to the increasing demand. On eBay a Wii console is sold over the official price of $249 with more than $250. Video games are in high demand now not only because of what they offer but also due to trouble in the toy industry. Gerrick Johnson, a toy industry analyst at BMO Capital Markets recounts that lead paint and dangerous magnets (Aqua Dots' colored beads that were making their way to must-have status were pulled because they were coated with a chemical that turned into the date-rape drug gamma hydroxy butyrate when swallowed) eventually made parents to send their children to play video games rather than play with their toys. If the video console is in so high demand, there is no question about how Nintendo's revenues have increased, only in the quarter ended September 30, it more than doubled its sales to $6.1 billion from a year earlier. After it got on the market on November 17, last year, more than 5.5 million Wiis were sold in the U.S. Actually it was time to come back after being surpassed by Sony Corp and Microsoft Corp in the last game consoles. A problem is the fact that Nintendo cannot satisfy holiday-season demand. Nevertheless, Sony who just launched PlayStation 3 could benefit the situation, according to Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer. Don't go away more news on the pending matter.

Chris Cantell annouces National Adoption Day

Every year, on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, hundreds of judges, attorneys, adoptions agencies, adoption professionals and child advocates volunteer their time to finalize adoptions of children from foster care and celebrate all families who adopt. This day has been given a name- National Adoption Day. Coalition co founded by Freddie Mac Foundation gathered communities from all 50 states of USA and finalized more than 3,330 adoptions of children from the foster care. This November, it was another successful year- the 8th in the row. National Adoption Day began with the Alliance for Children's Rights and support from the Freddie Mac Foundation, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, and others in the year 2000. Presently, there are about 513,000 children in the foster care system; approximately 114,000 of them are waiting to be adopted. "Year after year, the National Adoption Day Coalition is inspired by the families who open up their homes and hearts to children in need of adoption and the dedicated individuals who devote years to promising a better future to children in foster care," said Ralph F. Boyd, Jr., Chairman and CEO of the Freddie Mac Foundation. This year, president George W. Bush personally joined the celebration. As much as Freddie Mac Foundation succeeded on the charity field, his personal business as the nation n.2 buyer and guarantor of home loans experiences a major crisis. Freddie Mac lost $2 billion in the third-quarter of this year, overrunning all realistic expectations of Wall Street analysts. The future of his company will depend on strict cuts and changes, connected with the raising prices of properties. His career is endangered, but looking back to the National Adoption Day and its benefits, the words of president Bush suit the best: "Few missions in life are more rewarding than uniting loving children with moms and dads for the very first time,"

Global warning = global warming

We are the world, we are the nations! Doesn't that mean that the blue planet belongs to all of us? Doesn't it mean that this is our world and we need to protect it and care about it and love it at all times? Planet Earth suffers from global warming and this is a global warning for every single one of us! A U.N. climate change conference in Indonesia may produce a roadmap for countries to reduce their global-warming emissions after the Kyoto protocol expires in 2012. World leaders will start negotiations next month on the resort island of Bali. They hope for creating something like agreement on the roadmap for the future, likely timetables and deadlines towards defining the broad contours of where an agreement may take the world after 2012. No one expects any problems with establishing the way how to proceed on. The global warming issue became bigger than ever and now everyone seems to realize the importance of saving the world. This is not only political question though. We live on the planet as well and we do have responsibility for our actions. The way we treat the world could be just a little drop in the ocean but we never know which of the drops has the power to color the whole ocean. Even small action counts. Our world is giving us our living space, food, fresh air, water etc. What do we give to our world? We need to remember how much the world means. What would we do without it? Is there any way how we would survive without the conditions we have on our planet? We need to take this global warning seriously and start to act as people who are thankful and proud of the world, because we are the world, we are the nations.

Antarctica avoids catastrophe, cruise ship evacuated

MS Explorer, cruise ship packed with 154 passengers and crew has been safely evacuated, after it experienced problems near the Argentinean borders this week. The disaster had a lucky end, not as the case of the ferry Estonia, which caused more than a hundred of human lives. The boat went down after hitting an iceberg and the passengers spent several hours in lifeboats in sub-zero temperatures. "The water was already this high in our cabin in a matter of minutes," one passenger said. "We grabbed our thermals before we left and that was it. The rest is gone," added another. In less than one hour all passengers and crew, said to be cold but in good health, were safely transferred to the Nordnorge, and that vessel is now heading towards King George Island, three or four hours steaming away. Speaking on the BBC's News 24, the captain of the Nordnorge said that he was heading for the Chilean research station, from where it is expected that all can be flown back to the South American mainland. The accident has highlighted the growing tourist industry in the Antarctic. This region is experiencing a major touristic boom. In the 1992-93 seasons, about 6,700 tourists visited the Antarctic, according to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators. Last season, that had quadrupled to 29,500. What country wouldn't be pleased and happy about a sudden improvement? Antarctica, honestly, is not. The land, which serves as one of the most important world reserves, is now worried. Cruise ships and ferries can bring more of a catastrophe than behalf.

Ecuador, the present and the past

Try to guess where am I. People around here speak Spanish, there's Peru on the east and south and Colombia on the north. There's Pacific ocean also, and Galapagos Island are not that far away. Now You probably already know (if don't know I'll tell you anyway) I'm in Ecuador. Beautiful country of South America with it's shores, jungles, highlands and cities and of course people. Speaking of people, first human cultures in Ecuador dates back to 3500 B.C.. Arguably the most famous are Valdivia an Machalia culture. Later their territory were occupied by the Inca Empire and they assimilated. And yes, we are talking about the Incas. But in the 1532 Incas found themselves in the the middle of civil war (siblings, brothers Huascar and Atahualpa were fighting). Spanish conquistadors, concretely Francisco Pizarro, took advantage of this and conquered the Inca Empire. That is how Spain gained it's influence over the Ecuador. After nearly three hundred years of Spanish colonization Ecuador wanted to get rid of it. So the battle for independence began. It was a long, but successful one. In 1822 whole Ecuador gained his independence and was able to start a new era. The present Ecuador is modern, democratic, mostly catholic Latin American country with amazing and rich culture, fauna and flora (Galapagos Islands are on the UNESCO list) and also it's own problems. For instance government instability, unemployment, poverty or low safety at work. Like the incident that happened recently nearby the town Machala. Sixty miner got trapped in an underground gold mine. There was also an explosion and (at least) one person got killed. The explosion "demonstrates the need for responsible mining in Ecuador," said Interior Minister Gustavo Larrea.

Twelve days of Christmas

In the song people sing about Turtles, French hens, calling birds, golden rings, geese, swans, maids, dancing ladies, drums... If you buy all this things that the song recommend as Christmas gifts, you would pay $78,100. PNC company said so in the annual PNC Christmas Price Index. The amount is 4 percent higher than the last year. PNC is growing financial services organization spanning the retail, business and corporate markets, primarily dealing with financial services. Company can provide you with information from business overview, through media contacts, economic reports, to investor events. There's a lot going on at PNC and one of the services is also calculating the price of Christmas. They has been doing so each year since 1984. Although it seems to be humorous, the price index of Christmas gifts stated in the song mirrors actual economic situation and leading trends for future. For example, according the price of five golden rings we can find out the increasing price of gold, geese reflect increasing price of food stuff. Increasing prices could lead people to think more about gifts and buy rather one or two really suited for concrete person instead of headless shopping of senselessness. It would be really expensive to buy to your beloved all the things, mentioned in the song. It is disputable if such a big amount of gifts wouldn't spoil the Christmas spirit. It might be appreciated much higher if you sing the carol with all the love you have instead. If you are a bad singer, choose rather five golden rings.

Eclipse or the end of life

Sun, Moon, planets! they are so esoteric for me. I know that today's science makes big improvement in this topic but there is still something what we don't know exactly. That is really fascinating! People have been interested in these themes since the pass. I think that we all know that people had different theories about our Earth and space. They thought that our Earth was centre of space and everything was rotating around it. Then there were theories about modality of our planet; that Earth was some design of "slapjack" or "slab". Today we know true. We know what the reason of variation day and night is. But can you imagine the reactions of people in the pass when they saw first eclipse? They thought that it is the end of life or that some gods are angry with them. Anyway I want to say that today's technology, science, analyses or calculations can say more and make humanity ready for different situation. Of course we don't know everything yet but we know date of the next lunar eclipse. When? It is going to happen on Wednesday, 20th February, 2008. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes into Earth's shadow. The moon will start to enter the darkest part of Earth's shadow at 8.43p.m. EST. Total eclipse will be from 10.01p.m. to 10.51p.m. We can watch it with the naked eye from 8.43p.m. to 10.01p.m. The moon will take red color that is effect of light which is bent by Earth's atmosphere and combination of light from sunsets and sunrises. An eclipse is credited with saving the life if Christopher Columbus and his crew in 1504. The next eclipse will be on December 21, 2010.

Gecko-Inspired Waterproof Bio Bandage Finding

Gecko & the member of lizzard family regains his special attention once again. This small animal is able to run rapidly on the walls and ceilings convincing to defy the gravitation. More scientific explanation to this effect declared the fragile balance among adhesion and friction forces, originating from van der Waals forces which are controlled by the animal's feet. Gecko,a small lizzard, owes this extraordinary ability to his fine structure of the toes, containing setal arrays of numerous spatualaes on each seta. To be able to develop such a bio-tissue should mean, to create extremely adherrent biomembrane. Structure should replace damaged or defected bio membranes in a human body. Let's mention the most important ones & lung and heart diaphragm, stomach and guts etc....Replacing or repairing them should represent the key asset intoall kind of surgery. February 11, the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences publishes the findings of Massachusetts Institute of technology, with the team leader, a professor Robert Langer. Team succed and made a waterproof bandage inspired by the principles of gecko's climbing. The bandage immitates the surface of gecko's paws. Full of tinystructures, popularly said & small hills and valleys is able to resist in wet environment, for example vascular system, heart, lungs or gastric system. To make it stable in such a heterogenic environment, team used a sugarbased glue, to stick the computer designed bandage from bio rubber material firlmy to the current position. The first mounts have been tested on pig specimen. According to Jeffrey Karp, a collegue and a team member, there is huge demand for tape-based medical adhesive. Except of saving human lives, the impermeable bandage should be abused to carry drugs. ,,You could also put drugs in these and use them as drug or cell-delivery mechanisms,"professor Lager said.

Black-eyed peas

Researchers from the University of Virginia are working really hard to find the way how to increase the lack of black-eyed peas. They cooperate with growers from Africa because they would like to produce the cowpea. Cowpea is kind of an African soybean. It is a tougher type of the legume. This plant is very important protein for diet. African consume not only peas but they can prepare a food from leaves of the plant as well. Their animals eat the stems. Nearly 80 percent of the 3 million tons that are worldwide produced every year come from the west and central part of Africa. One big problem of this plant is that it is highly susceptible. It can be threated by insects, weather or parasitic weeds. There are places where cowpea has completely gone. That's why the cowpea production is reduced. There was developed a project that should stop or minimize these effects. The solution is modern molecular-based technology joined with traditional selective techniques of breeding. All that labour should help the growers from Africa. The genetic structure of cowpea is very similar to soybeans structure, which has been studied for years. So there were strong grounds that researchers could built on. Now the main task is to identify genetic markers that might control drought resistance, nutrition content and parasite immunity. Cowpea is medium-sized bean. There are several types of peas that can remind black eyed peas. The Californian Blackeye is pale-colored with a black spot. Another type, Goat's eye bean, is produced in Northern Mexico.

Biggest, baddest and meanest frog ever hopping on Earth

It is incredible! Every time I am reading an article about some new founded fossil it always shows it was an extra big animal, with some incredible features and I am always thankful I have no possibility to meet it today. This time scientists unearthed fossil of a fog which was living among dinosaurs million years ago and was as big as bowling ball. That's why they dubbed it Beelzebufo or Devil Toad. Beelzebufo is a word consisted from greek Beelzebub what means "devil" and Latin word "bufo" which means toad. Another reason why is this extraordinary ancient frog called devil is because of its big mouth. Scientists think it may except lizards, mammals and smaller fogs even ate newborn dinosaurs. This XXL toad wasn't special just because of its 10 pounds and 16 inches length, what made it look like it "was on steroids" jokingly said paleontologist David Krause from New York's Tony Brook University. This discovery was led by him and it shows on very close relatedness of this big toad to todays normal-sized frogs who live in South America. They are called "Pac-Man" due to their huge mouths and ability to swallow a mouse. But the importance of this discovery lies in the fact, that it points on challenging assumptions about ancient geography. The fact he Beelzebufo was found on Madagascar and its relatives are now only in South America points on possibility that once may have existed a land bridge which was connecting Madagascar to Antarctica (which was much warmer than it is today) and South America. It would then enabled animals move from one place to another and so this looks as one of the best explanations of this discovery. Krause began his research of fossils on the coast of Africa in 1993 when he was also finding dinosaur and crocodile fossils. After discovery of this large fossil of toad his team also confirmed that Beelzebufo didn't live an aquatic lifestyle, but it lived in a semi-arid environment where it camouflage itself. By this incredible discovery we are closer to knowledge of the ancient world and life on it.
